Selling Vintage: Etsy vs eBay
Vintage is the one category where the platform decision is as much a policy question as a fee question. Etsy's vintage buyers pay more, and Etsy's rules will shut a shop that breaks them.
The rules come first
Etsy defines vintage as an item at least 20 years old. That is not a marketing label, it is an eligibility rule, and Etsy does enforce it. Your listing also needs to be genuinely one of a kind or a small batch; reselling current mass-produced goods is what gets shops suspended.
eBay has no such restriction. Anything legal can be listed, which makes it the safer home for items whose age you cannot prove.
The fee maths
Etsy stacks three charges: a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on item plus shipping, and payment processing of about 3% plus $0.25. On a $45 item with $8 shipping that is roughly $0.20 + $3.45 + $1.82, so about $5.47.
eBay charges about 13.25% of the same $53 total plus $0.30, so about $7.32, before any label cost. Etsy is cheaper per sale, and the gap widens as prices rise.
Where the buyers are
Etsy shoppers arrive with decoration and gift intent. They are less price sensitive and more likely to pay for a story: the decade, the maker, the provenance. A well photographed 1970s ceramic can sell for several times what the same piece fetches in an eBay auction.
eBay buyers arrive with a part number and a search box. For tools, audio gear, camera equipment, and anything functional, that intent is worth more than Etsy's browsing audience.
Practical differences
- Etsy expects a shop: banner, policies, about section, consistent photography. eBay lets you list one item and leave
- Etsy charges renewal fees on unsold listings unless you manage them manually
- Etsy's offsite ads become mandatory above a sales threshold, which adds cost at volume
- eBay's auction format is genuinely useful for rare pieces where nobody knows the price
The rule of thumb
If it is decorative, giftable, provably 20+ years old, and photographs well, Etsy pays more. If it is functional, obscure, or you cannot document its age, eBay gets it sold.
